Students will get their words on Wednesday. The spelling test will be the following Wednesday.
How can I help my child?
Every week, the words that students receive will follow an English spelling rule. Help your child by sorting the words and try to figure out what the rule is. Sometimes there will also be the "oddball" (the words that don't follow the rule). Here are some other activities you can do during the week:
Blind sort
Word Hunts
Speed Sorts
Apply Generalizations
Alternative sortsEncourage flexible thinking, ask your child to sort their words in different ways besides the targeted categories. Possibilities include parts of speech, alphabetical order, number of syllables, rhyming words, homophone pairs and words with silent vowels or silent consonants.
Illustrate or use the word in contextDraw or use some of the words in context to demonstrate the meaning of the word. This activity can especially be helpful for homophones and homographs
